The shrill top end blends with the dark ribbon, and ends up being usable. If you use this microphone in conjunction with a dark ribbon mic in an M/S setup, it becomes fairly decent sounding. I ended up selling the microphone a few weeks later to make room for better sounding and usable mics.ĭespite how terrible it sounds as a standalone mic, I found one place where it is usable. After listening to it for even thirty minutes attempting every trick I knew to dull it down, I could not stand the sound and it was beginning to be painful. Every single source had that awfully shrill top end that could not be fixed. I put it through a tube preamp and rolled off some top end of the EQ, and tried it on several sources, including spoken word, acoustic guitar, piano, and percussion. Later in my career with a little more experience, I decided to give this mic one final try. I ended up never using this mic and it gathered dust in the back of my locker as my career was going by. It isn't a top end you can fix with EQ either, because it sounds distorted even though it is not. This mic adds a painfully bright and distorted quality to the upper harmonics of any source, especially so to sources without a clear top end. I bought this microphone as my first LDC when I was first starting in recording, and it was the source of an immense amount of frustration unbeknownst to me. I ran the mic through the M-Audio M-Track 2x2 interface into Presonus Studio One (Recommend for the included Channel Strip plugin for your vocal chain) Do note that this version doesn't come with the Pop Filter like in the past, but that's not an issue to me personally, as I found the pop filter included with the Spark to be useless, although it does look nice. Will definitely do business with Sweetwater again, I recommend Matt but I am sure all of the Sales dept are just as great.Īll in all, this is a great, affordable mic anyone can appreciate, but I certainly recommend Blue mics as a whole, having used both the Spark and the Yeti. BTW I had the mic in my hand the next day after purchase on the free-shipping option. Matt Emick was my Sales Engineer and although I wasn't able to take the calls, he did leave me voicemail to tell me my mic was on the way and further emails to let me know when it was shipped. I used the Three Easy Payments option (A WONDERFUL perk of purchasing through Sweetwater. I got this mic as part of Microphone month, in a bundle that included a free stand and Pro-Co cable. I found I personally prefer to use the dB filter but keep the high-pass filter disabled. The inclusion of a -20 dB pad and a high pass filter built-in is also helpful although not incredibly necessary. I cannot speak for the OG Bluebird but the Bluebird SL is an amazingly clear sounding condenser with bright, warm tone and a strong presence. The Bluebird doesn't have these problems. My biggest gripe with mics in the past (excluding the Spark) is the oversaturated highs and the really muddy sound that you get in the lower end. I'e had a Blue Yeti, Blue Spark, MXL 990, and now this. It's handled every style of music and instrument I've thrown at it-am absolutely a fan. Instead, there's a ton of depth to this mic and I've used it in almost every session since I bought it. It doesn't overdo it in the high end (I hate it when condensers are super bright). From vocals to acoustic guitar, saxophone and electric guitar-the sound is really crisp, full-bodied, clear and musical. I have yet to point this mic at an instrument and have it not sound amazing. The mic itself is solid - has a great weight and feel to it. I love the super-classy wooden case it comes with. Everything about the mic feels really high-end. So when I was in the market for a new all-purpose mic I thought I'd try the Bluebird SL. Always thought they looked really cool and I've heard good things about several of their mics. I've always been curious about Blue mics. I do anything from hip-hop VO to singer/songwriter and small jazz ensembles. I have a small project studio where I record local artists.
